A book club separates recommendations from meetups using forum topics. Someone requests an event status in the meetup topic, but the bot posts the answer in recommendations—or General. Delivery to the right group is not the same as delivery to the right topic.
This guide concerns destinations inside forum supergroups, not private-chat organization for long-running tasks. Specify both the destination chat and the destination within that chat before adding more features.
Keep chat, topic, and message identifiers separate
aiogram's sendMessage reference exposes the target chat separately from message_thread_id, which selects a forum topic. It also lists a distinct direct_messages_topic_id; fields for different kinds of chats are not interchangeable.
An implementation brief should distinguish three pieces of context:
| Context | Job in this example | What it cannot replace |
|---|---|---|
| Chat identifier | Locate the club's supergroup | It does not select a topic on its own |
| Topic identifier | Locate meetups within that group | A topic name or an identifier from another group is not a substitute |
| Original message identifier | Track the request, or quote it when needed | It is not a general-purpose substitute for a topic identifier |
python-telegram-bot's ForumTopic reference likewise separates the identifier from the name. A useful design is therefore to store ordinary-topic routes under a chat-and-topic pair, keeping names for display and human checks. Renaming “Meetups” to “October meetups” should not create a second set of registration records.
That compound key is a design recommendation, not an instruction to install a framework. A topic is not an authorization boundary either: permission to inspect a roster needs its own rule.
Treat General explicitly instead of guessing an ID
Telegram's Forum topics documentation describes the special General topic and the ability to close ordinary topics temporarily. It documents Telegram's native API, MTProto—not calls to paste directly into a Bot API or Serverless SDK implementation.
In particular, do not turn the native API's General identifier of 1 into a blanket rule that fills every missing field with message_thread_id = 1. First verify how the current interface and SDK represent General and select a destination.
Specify two cases. Requests originating in General use the verified General sending behavior. A request known to come from an ordinary topic, but lacking usable routing context, is a routing failure. Missing context must not silently become an instruction to post in General.
Bind the destination to the request, not the latest activity
Imagine someone requests a status in meetups, then posts an unrelated message in recommendations. If the bot stores one global “last active topic,” the first response may follow the second message to the wrong place.
Capture the destination context needed by each request and use that context for its output. For work that must survive separate executions, assess whether the available storage can retain the route. Do not assume that later execution can read the same process's memory.
A small diagnostic record can contain a request reference, target chat, target-topic kind, ordinary-topic identifier, and delivery outcome. Compare input and output destinations before exporting chat transcripts. Never ask maintainers to post bot tokens in a public group as troubleshooting evidence.
An unavailable target is not permission to post elsewhere
Define a policy for closed or deleted topics and failed sends. A useful conservative default is to pause that output, retain its target and failure category, and ask an authorized maintainer to check. Do not switch to General or guess another topic from a matching name. This is a recommended business policy, not a guarantee about Telegram error codes or complete event coverage.
If a fallback destination is genuinely required, have an administrator configure it and approve its audience in advance. Permission to send a non-personal incident summary to an operations topic does not authorize forwarding a registration roster there. After recovery, verify the destination again; eventual delivery alone is not success.
A requirement you can give to AI
Build a forum-group helper for a book club. Version one handles /status in one approved supergroup and returns fixed event-status text; it needs no external API or paid AI. Ordinary-topic requests must receive their output in the originating topic. General must use the current SDK's verified sending behavior. Capture the destination per request; never use the last active topic. Renaming a topic must not change its binding. If an ordinary-topic request lacks routing context, or its destination becomes unavailable, do not redirect it to General. Retain minimal diagnostics for an administrator. First check whether the SDK can receive and send topic context. If not, state the limitation and reduce the scope to a verified single-chat entry point instead of pretending multi-topic support exists.
Fixed text lets you test routing without connecting a registration database. Once routing passes, specify access to real records and authorization separately.
Acceptance checks after publishing
- Interleave requests in topics A and B of the same group; check every response's destination.
- Use similarly named topics in two test groups; verify that routes never cross chats.
- Rename a topic and repeat the request; display-name changes must not break the binding.
- Test General and an ordinary topic separately, checking that missing identifiers are not blindly filled in.
- In an administrator-controlled test environment, close a topic or exercise a stale binding; failed output must not move to another topic.
- Where context must survive separate executions, check repeat execution and a compatible release. Preserve the correct route or fail explicitly; never guess a destination.
These are proposed tests to run in real Telegram, not a claim that your bot has already passed them.
Where BotFatherV2 fits—and what still needs checking
BotFatherV2 helps create and modify bots through AI conversation. Put the routing rules into the requirement card, then check the current fixed SDK, generation report, and behavior after publication. Framework references here do not mean that the platform installs those frameworks.
The public development documentation checked on 20 October 2026 still excludes arbitrary npm modules and Node/Bun runtime APIs, and new paid runtime AI integrations are outside the first version. AI-assisted development does not imply an autonomous runtime agent. BotFatherV2 is independent of Telegram's official BotFather and is not affiliated with Telegram.
